About The George Inn

London's last surviving galleried coaching inn, now owned by the National Trust. This 17th-century landmark was frequented by Shakespeare and Dickens.

History & Heritage

The George Inn in Southwark is the last surviving galleried coaching inn in London, a type of establishment that was once common across the city. The current building dates from 1677, rebuilt after a fire destroyed the medieval inn, and it once formed three sides of a courtyard where stagecoaches would arrive and depart.

The inn's history reaches back to the era of Shakespeare, whose Globe Theatre stood nearby, and plays may once have been performed in its courtyard. Charles Dickens knew the pub well and mentioned it in Little Dorrit. Today it is owned by the National Trust and protected for future generations.

What to Expect

The cobbled courtyard, with its distinctive wooden galleries, is the star attraction and a wonderful place to enjoy a pint on a sunny day. Inside, a series of historic rooms with low beams and old settles serve a range of cask ales, including a house ale, alongside traditional pub food.
