About Bushy Park

The second largest Royal Park, next to Hampton Court Palace, famous for its free-roaming deer, the grand Chestnut Avenue and the baroque Diana Fountain.

History & Heritage

Bushy Park's royal history began in 1529 when King Henry VIII took over the land alongside Hampton Court Palace, using it as a deer hunting ground. In the early 18th century the architect Sir Christopher Wren designed the magnificent mile-long Chestnut Avenue as a grand approach to the palace, centred on the baroque Diana Fountain.

During the 20th century the park played a remarkable role in world history: in the Second World War it housed a major military camp, and it was here at 'Camp Griffiss' that General Eisenhower and the Allied command planned Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings of 1944. Today the restored Water Gardens and open grassland make it one of London's most peaceful large parks.

What to Expect

Expect a vast, open royal landscape with around 320 free-roaming red and fallow deer, grand tree-lined avenues and the restored 17th-century Water Gardens. The Chestnut Avenue is spectacular in May when the horse chestnuts blossom. Quieter than nearby Richmond Park, Bushy offers excellent walking and cycling, and pairs perfectly with a visit to Hampton Court Palace next door.
