About British Museum

The world's first national public museum, holding around eight million objects spanning two million years of human history, from the Rosetta Stone to the Parthenon sculptures.

History

The British Museum was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1753, built around the collection of physician and naturalist Sir Hans Sloane. It opened to the public in 1759 in Montagu House, offering free admission to all "studious and curious persons" — a principle it still keeps for its permanent collection today.

The museum's grand Greek Revival building, designed by Sir Robert Smirke, was completed in the mid-19th century. In 2000 the inner courtyard was transformed into the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court, covered by a spectacular tessellated glass roof surrounding the historic circular Reading Room.

What to Expect

Expect vast galleries you could explore for days. Most visitors head first for the Rosetta Stone, the Egyptian mummies and the Parthenon sculptures, but quieter rooms on ancient Mesopotamia, Japan and the Americas are just as rewarding. Arrive at opening or on a Friday evening to avoid the busiest crowds, and pick a few galleries rather than trying to see everything.
