Borough Market
About Borough Market
London's most celebrated food market beside London Bridge, packed with fresh produce, artisan cheese, bakers and street food stalls under its Victorian iron and glass roof.
History
A market has traded near the southern end of London Bridge for centuries, with records stretching back to at least the 13th century. In 1756 the market moved a short distance to its current site after Parliament ended trading on the bridge approach itself.
For most of its history it was a wholesale market supplying London's greengrocers. From the late 1990s it reinvented itself as a destination retail food market, and today it is one of the best-known food markets in the world.
What to Expect
Expect crowds, especially at lunchtime and on Saturdays, and plenty of free samples. Come hungry: grab a hot sandwich, curry or oysters from the street food stalls, then browse cheesemongers, butchers and bakers. Arrive earlier in the morning for a calmer visit and the best choice of produce.
