The Best Day Trips from London

Historic cities, seaside towns and rolling countryside — all within easy reach of the capital by train.

Oxford and Cambridge

The two great university cities make for classic day trips, each reachable in around an hour by train. Wander among honey-coloured colleges, punt along the river, and soak up centuries of academic history. Oxford offers grand architecture and covered markets; Cambridge charms with its Backs and riverside meadows. Both are compact enough to explore on foot.

Brighton and the coast

For sea air, Brighton is under an hour from London and packs in a pebble beach, the iconic pier, the exotic Royal Pavilion and the independent shops of the Lanes. If you prefer quieter shores, the Kent and Sussex coastlines offer classic seaside towns, white cliffs and fresh seafood within easy reach.

Windsor and royal history

Just a short train ride west, Windsor is home to the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, still an official royal residence. Combine a tour of the state apartments and St George's Chapel with a riverside walk and a wander through the historic town. Nearby, the grounds of Windsor Great Park offer miles of peaceful trails.

The countryside and stately homes

The Chilterns, the North Downs and the villages of the Cotswolds' eastern edge bring rolling hills and chocolate-box charm within a day's reach. Many stately homes and gardens, from Hatfield House to Hever Castle, are accessible by train and a short taxi, offering grand interiors and beautifully landscaped grounds.

Planning your trip

Book train tickets in advance for the best fares, and consider a railcard if you travel often. Aim for an early start to maximise your day, check attraction opening hours, and travel light. Off-peak tickets after the morning rush are cheaper and mean quieter trains for the journey out of the city.
