The Princess Louise on High Holborn was built in 1872 and remodelled in 1891, and is celebrated as one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian 'gin palace' in Britain. Named after Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, it was designed to dazzle, with no expense spared on its lavish decorative interior.
The pub retains extraordinary original features, including ornate etched and gilded mirrors, decorative ceramic tiles by craftsman W. B. Simpson, a magnificent moulded ceiling, and even a Grade II listed gentlemen's lavatory of marble. A meticulous restoration by Samuel Smith's brewery reinstated the original partitions and 'snob screens' that once divided the bar into private drinking areas.
